Trista was startled by the knock at her door. She sat on the couch a second thinking maybe it was someone knocking at the apartment next door. It wasn’t, they knocked again. Trista rose quietly creeping towards the door to look out the peephole.
“Who is it?”
“Detectives Moon and Kamden,” one of the persons answered.
“Show me your badges,” she commanded through the door.
They did just that each of them holding the gold shields to the hole she peered through. Trista unlatched the door slowly.
“How may I help you?” she asked once finally getting the door opened.
“We’d like to ask you a few questions about Mr. Galveston.”
“I told you everything in the report.”
“We just have a few other follow-up questions,”
“And you are?”
“I’m sorry. I’m detective Moon this is my partner detective Kamden,” she extended her hand for a shake.
As Trista took her hand in the gesture she noticed the male detective looking around her apartment. He wasn’t paying much attention to her but rather her surroundings.
“You say you met Mr. Galveston where?”
“We met a book release party a few months ago. He flirted with me, we exchanged numbers and had been chatting. I agreed to go out with him because I’d gotten comfortable with him. That turned out to be a mistake.”
“Did he happen to mention if he knew anyone else at the event?” Detective Kamden finally spoke.
“He did not, come to think of it.”
“Has he tried to contact you?”
“No. If he had I would’ve called you guys.”
“So, you agreed to go out with him. How did you end up back at his home?”
“I put all that in my report.”
“We just want to hear it from you.”
“I met him at the restaurant. He offered to drive me home because I’d been drinking which was odd that I felt very intoxicated after only two drinks. And at first I just thought maybe the drinks were stronger than I thought but now I know he drugged me. He must’ve drugged my second drink when I went to the bathroom, is my guess. The room didn’t start spinning until after our meal.”
“And you agreed to let him take you home?”
“Not at first, but he insisted. Like I said we’d been conversing for months.”
“But, he didn’t take you to your home.”
“I guess I passed out in the car. He didn’t know my address. According to him as he took me out the car, he could put me in his spare room. I was in and out of it, everything is a blur.”
“And you’re sure he hasn’t tried to contact you?”
“I have blocked him from my contacts. Why do you keep asking me that?”
“Mr. Galveston seems to have disappeared.”
“That has nothing to do with me.”
“I haven’t seen or talked to him at all.”
“Well, if he should try to contact you, make sure to let us know,” Detective Moon said.
“You didn’t even need to tell me that. I would anyway.”
“Have a good day Ms. Halsted.”
The detectives left. Trista picked up her phone.
“Two detectives just left here looking for him. I told them I hadn’t seen or talked to him.”
“Good. They can’t connect you to anything.”
“You sure they can’t come after you?”
“I covered my tracks. That muthafucka will not ever do that to you or anyone else again. And they’ll never find him.”
“Thanks, daddy.”
“Anything for my baby girl.”
